## How to determin CONDITIONED or SEMIHEATED space:

It must be determined if the building or building space is conditioned or unconditioned. The “condition” of a space refers to the cooling and heating capacity (primarily heating for the northeastern states) of the HVAC system. There is a breaking point for the Btu/h-ft sq. (BTU) from which a space is considered unconditioned or conditioned. Refer to the ASHRAE climate zone chart then refer to the heated space criteria.

For climate zones 4, 5 and 6 (northeastern states), the break point is 15 BTU (zone 4 and 5) and 20 BTU for zone 6.

i .e. Semiheated heating cavity for zone 4 and 5 would be between 3.4 Btu and 15 Btu per h-ft sq)

Semiheated heating cavity for zone 6 would be between 3.4 Btu and 20 Btu per h-ft sq)

For climate zone 4 and 5, assuming the heating capacity is 15 Btu per (h-ft sq) or more, than the space is conditioned.

For climate zone 6, assuming the heating capacity is 20 Btu per (h-ft sq) or more, than it’s conditioned.

Example: Assuming a 175,000 square foot building, has a capacity of 3,500,000 Btu per(h-ft sq) or more in _one six, then the space is conditioned. 175,000 x 20 BTU = 3,500,000

**Semiheated Space:**Enclosed space which is heated to a capacity between 3.4 Btu per (h-Ft sq), but less than the Btu per chart for the climate zone.i .e. Semiheated heating cavity for zone 4 and 5 would be between 3.4 Btu and 15 Btu per h-ft sq)

Semiheated heating cavity for zone 6 would be between 3.4 Btu and 20 Btu per h-ft sq)

**Enclosed space that is enclosed and heated and cooled. The heating capacity is zone dependent.The heating capacity is dependent upon the climate Zone.**

Conditioned space:Conditioned space:

For climate zone 4 and 5, assuming the heating capacity is 15 Btu per (h-ft sq) or more, than the space is conditioned.
